Sustainability

We embrace our responsibility as designers to maximise sustainable development in the built environment.

Our principles

Sustainability is at the heart of our designs

Our approach includes net zero targets but also encompasses wellbeing, comfort, sense of place, social value, biodiversity, water conservation – all factors which make a truly sustainable design. We have been involved in some pioneering healthcare projects in the UK, including BREEAM schemes which set benchmarks.

Our Goals

Together with our clients and other professionals, we aim to create environments which are healthy and inspiring. We work tenaciously through all the design stages to achieve the desired building performance. To support this, we make sure everyone in our practice is well-versed in our sustainability goals and dedicated to implementing them. Given our wealth of experience especially in healthcare, we apply our knowledge appropriately across different scales and types of schemes.

Sustainability across projects

To make sure that sustainability is embedded in all our projects and to support our clients’ ambitions, we:

  • Advise clients to incorporate these principles at the outset including sustainability appraisal of client policies and recommending life cycle analysis and appointment of specialist consultants. Early planning and measurement give the best possible chance of a successful outcome.
  • Design buildings ‘fabric first’ with passive design measures to reduce energy demand, combined with energy-efficient systems and renewable sources.
  • Put forward standardised systems as much as possible. Design solutions, products, and details are thoughtfully chosen to represent best value in terms of quality, sustainability, capital and life cycle costs.
  • Specify considerately through choosing sustainable materials, minimising waste, and prioritising the use of locally sourced and recycled materials.

Carbon Reduction Plan

We are committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050, with a target to reach this goal by 2040 through our Carbon Reduction Plan.

We aim to contribute positively to both the built and natural environment by incorporating best practices in architectural and sustainable design. We fully support the NHS Net Zero Carbon Targets of 2040 for direct emissions and 2045 for emissions it influences.

Our Practice

Sustainability

  • Awareness: Everyone in our office plays a role in implementing sustainable practices. We are committed to boosting environmental awareness through specialist learning and knowledge sharing.
  • Energy and Materials: Our aim is to limit energy usage. We encourage sustainable behaviours and automation and optimise the resources we have.
  • Minimising Waste: We prioritise reuse and longevity in office materials; consumables are selected considering packaging and transport impact.
  • Performance: We seek opportunities to do better, continually monitoring and improving the impact of internal processes. This is backed up by our Carbon Reduction Plan and Environmental and Quality policies.
