Introduction

01

Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMH) is a fondly regarded local hospital serving the community of Bexley and Sidcup. However, clinical services were functioning from a tired estate, with many rooms and other spaces no-longer considered fit for purpose. Murphy Philipps was engaged by Oxleas NHS Trust to lead the hospital transformation design programme as part of a £30M investment. The aim of this was to improve patient and staff facilities at the hospital. The redevelopment was carried out over 4 main construction phases via the P21+framework.

Strategic goals and objectives

02

Key Project objectives were to provide a new:

  • Entrance lobby, reception, and 24-hour Urgent Care Centre
  • Open stairway to improve vertical circulation
  • Outpatient department including cardiac and audiology services
  • Renal & Dialysis unit
  • Ophthalmology and Orthodontic services
  • Diabetes and Podiatry services
  • Operating Theatres
  • Community Diagnostic Centre

Alongside the client and design team, we developed a standard specification for phased development to meet long-term maintenance and control of infection requirements.

This demonstrates what is possible with vision and expertise, by transforming existing buildings into contemporary, compliant clinical spaces within a limited budget and programme.

Implementation and engagement

03

Multiple stakeholders deliver services across the site, which requires a considered management process to balance differing requirements. Murphy Philipps led a series of strategy groups where key representatives were invited to attend workshop meetings to develop the brief and design strategy against their respective disciplines.

Works phasing was also complex due to the adjacent clinical services needing to continue to deliver as normal. Having established where the decant space opportunities were located, a work phasing strategy was developed alongside clinicians and the estates team. This allowed the project objectives to be realised whilst minimising disruption.

Outcomes and success

04

This project holds importance as it marks 10 years of successful project collaboration between Murphy Philipps and QMH. During that time, we have transformed the internal environment from an inadequate, gloomy, and dated space to bright, welcoming, and contemporary facilities. Working closely with Oxleas NHS Trust, Contractors and the design team, we developed standard specifications for the interior environments and fittings.

Now complete, The CDC at QMH offers a one stop shop of clinical services that serve the community of Bexley, London, and North Kent.
