Completed by Murphy Philipps in 2018, the project is the refurbishment of the existing Children’s in-patients ward at the Royal Free Hospital. The main aims were to:
The scheme required careful co-ordination as the work was undertaken in a live tower and could not impact on adjacent floors.
We worked closely with the users and patient representatives to create a bright and vibrant environment, where children of all ages feel comfortable.
Along with the standardised rooms, the design incorporated circulation corridors, which were regarded as important spaces where play and activity could also take place.
Great focus was given to developing a colour scheme for the project. A branding design for the department was created in close collaboration with the client, staff, parents, and children. This differentiates it from other departments and provides clear wayfinding.
Materials were carefully chosen, which resulted in a practical, modern, and playful environment. The unit offers various dedicated child-friendly spaces which they previously lacked. The overall outcome is a much-improved department for children and parents alike helping reduce stress and anxiety.
