Introduction

01

The project is the development of 13 new bedrooms on Level 1, of the main London Clinic building at 149 Harley Street. The main aim of the scheme was to support surgical activity and increase the overall quality of facilities and overnight accommodation on the site.

All bedrooms were required to be single rooms with dedicated walk-in shower en-suite facilities and a ceiling hoist to the assisted rooms. The main strategic drivers to the scheme were to:

  • Provide a space that promotes nursing care excellence and mitigates the risk of infection spread
  • Delivers a five-star bedroom environment

Strategic goals and objectives

02

The interior design concept supports the activities carried out in the bedroom by clearly identifying and, where possible, separating three main functional areas as follows.

  • the bed head unit with medical supports and clinical activity space
  • the clinical unit for handwashing, dressings, and drug preparation
  • the patient unit space for personal storage and entertainment

Widespread consultation was carried out with the stakeholder group to develop the detailed requirements for the upgrade.

Implementation and engagement

03

The process focused on lessons learned from the previously completed 4 bedrooms on Devonshire Place.  These had set a strong benchmark for facilities and quality standards, but the Clinic’s culture of continuous improvement sought to develop these further with Murphy Philipps help.

To inform the new designs a detailed post occupancy review of the completed rooms was carried out involving clinical staff, housekeeping, patients and infection control.  A number of key things were identified for improvements for example junction details on the clinical unit for better cleaning, as well as patient luggage storage.

One key area was optimising systems the environmental controls patients were able to personalise.

Outcomes and success

04

The design of the bedrooms marks a significant enhancement to the accommodation available for patients. The project:

  • maximises comfort
  • addresses needs from different cultures and beliefs
  • promotes privacy and dignity
  • encompasses technology
  • offers tranquillity

The bedrooms design moves away from stereotypical hospitals to offer a best-in-class facility and an environment that promotes healing and promotes wellbeing.
