Introduction

01

The London Clinic's strategic aim is to maintain the hospital's status as a world-class medical centre of choice for its consultants, patients and staff.

To achieve this ambition, a Capital Development Programme was implemented consisting of several infrastructure and clinical department upgrade projects over 5 years.

Strategic goals and objectives

02

The brief for the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) was to provide a 13-bed fully compliant ICU with the ability to accept infection cases and treat high-dependency patients without compromising the level of care.  A VIP suite was also required to meet the needs of the Hospital’s higher-profile clients.

Murphy Philipps was previously involved in the construction of the Plant Tower project, an enabling scheme prerequisite to the ICU.

Implementation and engagement

03

The existing building had many physical constraints, which were significant challenges for the project. One of the key challenges was the floor to ceiling heights, which required very close collaboration with the design team to achieve a workable solution.

The completed scheme delivers a patient-focused, modern, and functional facility within these constraints. Key features of the design are:

  • Natural daylight to all rooms with views out to help patient well-being and recovery
  • Family support space suitable for large or small groups
  • Natural materials, along with colour and nature-inspired artwork, were incorporated to enhance the experience for patients and visitors, creating an environment that supports families, relatives, and visitors during what is often a stressful time
  • Functional, well designed, and naturally lit staff areas were implemented to promote good morale
  • Digitally advanced through the use of technology to enhance patient care and experience

The design of the new unit has responded to the client brief’s objectives prioritizing patients’ safety, privacy, and dignity; and it has delivered a physical infrastructure that achieves and exceeds those goals. We are extremely proud of the new unit.

I notice that some of the ceiling panels are covered with images of the sky, which it occurs to me must be a nice touch for someone on a trolley.

Outcomes and success

04

The resultant design delivered a best-in-class experience, that is:

  • Focused on Patient-Centred Wellbeing, where staff can provide the very best care for those at their most vulnerable
  • Supportive of families, relatives, and visitors at a time that is filled with anxiety
  • A modern facility promoting infection control and supporting workflow efficiency, patient observation and effectiveness

The ICU was rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission in November 2017 for “its holistic design approach, promoting wellness and creating an environment that is efficient and psychologically supportive.”
