Introduction

01

Murphy Philipps Associates has recently designed the new Renal Unit at St. George’s University Hospital in partnership with St George's, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group and Integrated Health Projects(IHP), the joint venture between VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine.

The new Renal Unit forms part of a wider programme to improve health outcomes in the local community, and to upgrade and extend Renal clinical services on site. The building comprises:

  • 16 dialysis bays and 8 private dialysis bedrooms
  • 81 beds, with 72% single ensuite rooms
  • Improved pathways & accessibility from Blackshaw Road
  • Landscaped gardens & accessible outdoor spaces

The proposal included ongoing, efficient delivery of clinical services with links into the wider hospital via the Atkinson Morley Wing, whilst maintaining ongoing delivery of services in adjacent buildings.

Strategic goals and objectives

02

MPA was approached in early 2024 to undertake a Peer Review and Validations of the Stage 3 design and help the Trust address a number of non-compliances with Department of Health HBN/HTM design guidance, prior to being commissioned to develop through to RIBA Stage 4 Technical Design.

The project has been designed to BIM Level 2 and in compliance with ISO 19650, working collaboratively with the design team with regular Revit and IFC information exchanges. The project fully complies with P22 BIM requirements and includes asset data information for use in the operation of the building following handover.

The project sets a good example for the use of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC), sustainability, and efficiency in design, exceeding NHS targets for BREEAM Excellent and Net Zero Carbon.

Implementation and engagement

Implementation, engagement and outcomes

A number of design packages required re-working to meet the Trust’s anticipated cost plan, whilst also addressing non-compliant aspects of the previous design. MPA worked with the Contractor and Stakeholders to achieve maintain the spirit of a bold identity, within budget and safely provide clinical services.

The existing hospital ground floor level is almost a full building storey higher than the external ground level of the proposed site. This required careful design of external works and lower ground level to provide a consistent hospital level.

The design delivers a stylish landmark building with a bold identity, located at a key entry point to the hospital campus, reflecting the Trust’s forward-thinking approach to delivery of care and investment in Renal clinical services.

The layout optimises clinical and patient flows and creates a sociable, patient-focussed environment, especially important to those receiving procedures that take long periods of time, alongside flexibility for privacy for those who need it.
