The Sudbury Community Health Centre replaces out-of-date community outreach facilities and provides space for a GP surgery. The new facility is located on the North Eastern edge of Sudbury adjacent to Waldingfield Road and Church Field Road with an area of 1.42 hectares (3.5 acres). The building provides a setting to deliver modern health services, whilst acting as a focal point in the local community.
The design was developed using HBN 11-01 guidance to provide a flexible healthcare facility suitable to house a broad range of commissioned services. This includes standard sized rooms carefully allocated to support differing activities for future flexibility.
The services provided include:
Two additional suites for consultation and examination.
On arrival at the facility, the simplicity of the layout and location of control points was carefully considered to enable clear wayfinding. Key elements of the building are easily located, such as the reception, vertical circulation, and main departments.
As the community had been promised a new facility for some time, early and managed engagement was crucial in delivering the scheme. Consultation was undertaken with the proposed health care providers and the Sudbury community. Several workshops were undertaken throughout the design and delivery process. This also included a competition to find a piece of unique artwork from a local artist which was judged by a panel, including members of the community.
The scheme has been warmly welcomed and considered an exemplar Community Health Centre. It achieved an “excellent” rating under BREEAM. This was attained through careful site strategies with regards to landscape and ecology, the installation of two sedum roofs, a small PV array and considered material selection.
